An ocean of opportunity
Europe is surrounded by seas and oceans; they are our past, present and future. The European Union needs an Integrated Maritime Policy to benefit from the full potential of our seas and oceans.

At the last Conference, Elspeth Atwool and Anne Lappourouze alerted us to new Eu policy being constructed. Many environmental groups are making their views known to the parliament. Are the fishermen of Scotland, and other sea users. http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/ is the site to visit before making comments.

Broadband access became generally available to Easdale islanders very recently as a result of pressure on and installation work done by BT. As someone pushing for this work to be done, I can understand the frustration experienced by others. Perhaps this is an issue for the SIF to take forward, to help consolidate the already excellent networking that is taking place.
Someone somewhere must know the quality and extent of broadband roll out amongst the islands. If SIF can get access to this info, it can bring pressure to bear on the appropriate authorities to fill in the gaps and improve the situation on places like Cumbrae. With good quality broadband, we can think more seriously about video conferencing etc, particularly for the Committee.

In the meantime, I think there is a case to raise SIF awareness generally through a 'road show' at key locations. I would suggest that Ian, as our Chair, could front key presentations on the aims and objectives of SIF, what it means to the locals, and what we are doing at the various levels of Government and funding agencies. By the time this has been organised, and probably after the conference on Orkney in April, we should have progressed on the SIF basics currently being developed.

On Cumbrae we have Broadband all through BT lines that were installed or so I have been informed by submarine cable in the late 50's, so doesn't take much imagination to work out that our and no doubt many of the rest of us have a very inferior primary connection to the system. My B/B speed 1.1mb/sec max no opportunity to increase in the foreseeable future unless we go to SKY. As you can see I'm not a happy bunny and am reluctant to give Mr. Murdoch any of my cash
